Focus group
I carried out a focus group for my music magazine with a target audience between the ages of 13-18. I asked my group a couple of questions on the cover page, contents and double page spread. I found that doing this focus group was really helpful, it has given me an idea of what I should look out for when I create my actual magazine. This group also helped to give me an idea of the colour scheme, images, text and layout which I can use for my magazine.
Quotes have been picked out and analysed to develop an understanding of how I want to create my magazine -
“I prefer ‘We Love Pop’ magazine because the colours used
are nice and it’s a different colour scheme (blue and orange) which you don’t
often see whereas the other magazine used general colours (pink and yellow)”
From this I can try to prevent using the
colour scheme yellow and pink as it has been overused in Pop magazines and it isn't attractive anymore. So I
will try to use different colours with pink for my colour scheme, pink is a very girly colour this is suitable for my target audience.
“Teenage girls are most likely to be the target audience
because the cover shows boy bands, celebrities and posters also the colour pink
has been used”
For my colour scheme I can use pink as it is suited for
teenage girls (my target audience), I can also take extra pictures to use as advertising posters and add it to the bottom of the cover. I will also include famous artists
names this will interest more teenagers into buying the magazine.
“Pull quotes draws you in”
I will need to wisely decide what I want my pull quote to
say for my cover and double page spread for it to be effective making the
reader want to read more. Also to be able to pull the audience in I should keep it
short and snappy rather than long as it may put readers off and it wouldn’t
stand out as much as the font size may have to be small to fit other features
onto the magazine as well.
“I like a variety of text and pictures because it makes it
more appealing to the eye and it makes it easier to digest the information this
also makes the layout look a lot better”
To make my double page spread appealing I will have to think
about the amount of text and images I will be using, I should try to balance
them out so there will be a variety of both and it will make the layout
attractive. Too much text will usually bore teenagers and it may not be easy to
digest the information so including images will grab their attention.
Analysis from Survey
As you can see from the results the genre Pop is the most popular genre, this is beneficial for me because I plan on creating a Pop magazine and many of my correspondents prefer Pop genre
This is to see whether they have any interest in reading music magazines, few more people had said no, from this I can tell that I will release my magazine monthly instead of weekly
From my results I can see that image is what attracts many people to a magazine, this gives me a clear idea on what I need to focus on the most for when I produce my magazine
This is to know what features may put people off, few people had said too much writing with different font sizes and too many use of colours can be unattractive so I will try to avoid using them in my magazine
During interviews, which I will be using for my double page spread, people like to read about artist’s personal life, their profession and their childhood. I can use few of these ideas to create my interview
This is to make the price seem more realistic when I add it to the front cover
Online survey
As you can see at the top, I created a survey on surveymonkey.com, my survey is related to my music magazine and I used Facebook and Whatsapp to ask few people to complete the survey. Altogther I have received 16 respondents to fill out the survey. This will help to give an idea of how I should be creating my magazine and I’m aware of what to look out for.
I promoted my surveys through two social networks - Whatsapp and Facebook. I asked people to take part in my survey.

Research Rationale
Since I go to sixth form, the target group I mainly have
access to are teenagers between the ages of 11-19 years. The type of research
I will be conducting is an online survey for teenagers to complete. This is
much more efficient rather than just using surveys on paper as it saves wasting
15 pages of paper and it’s not as time consuming as it is online, I also don’t
have to chase after people to fill it out. I can just ask many people online to
fill them out by requesting on social sites such as Facebook, twitter and
yahoo. I will also be interviewing a couple of people of the audience target I
want to achieve for my magazine, the questions will relate to how they find
magazines attractive. I will have a set of questions ready to keep the
interview flowing rather than making it up on the spot so it doesn’t seem to be
all over the place. I will ask open questions so they can talk about many things
rather than just having yes or no questions which is more suitable for my
survey. All of this research will give me an idea of how I can produce an ideal
magazine for a teenager. For my research I will need to have a camera,
computer, Youtube account and atleast two magazines to record the interview,
I’ll also need to use the internet to produce a survey on a website
specifically for surveys, SurveyMonkey, I can sign up instantly through Google
and produce the survey and use the social network to get my survey across to
many people. This site also produces a
graph for my results; this saves me time from having to do it myself.

Brief
Our media brief is to produce a music magazine front cover, contents and double page spread on a genre of our choice. Since the start of our course I have been deconstructing different genres of music
magazine covers and been looking at how effective they are. Also
in September we were given bridging units which had involved analysing
magazines this has helped to give myself an understanding of what key features make a magazine. I am quite nervous to produce this magazine as I may come across
some problems with the programme (Photoshop) or the images might not turn out the way I want them to but I do have some skills from the preliminary
task which was given to the class at the beginning of the year, when we had to produce
a school magazine involving us to use Photoshop and having to produce our own pictures.
