Focus group

I carried out a focus group for my music magazine with a target audience between the ages of 13-18. I asked my group a couple of questions on the cover page, contents and double page spread. I found that doing this focus group was really helpful, it has given me an idea of what I should look out for when I create my actual magazine. This group also helped to give me an idea of the colour scheme, images, text and layout which I can use for my magazine.

Quotes have been picked out and analysed to develop an understanding of how I want to create my magazine -

“I prefer ‘We Love Pop’ magazine because the colours used are nice and it’s a different colour scheme (blue and orange) which you don’t often see whereas the other magazine used general colours (pink and yellow)”
From this I can try to prevent using the colour scheme yellow and pink as it has been overused in Pop magazines and it isn't attractive anymore. So I will try to use different colours with pink for my colour scheme, pink is a very girly colour this is suitable for my target audience.

“Teenage girls are most likely to be the target audience because the cover shows boy bands, celebrities and posters also the colour pink has been used”
For my colour scheme I can use pink as it is suited for teenage girls (my target audience), I can also take extra pictures to use as advertising posters and add it to the bottom of the cover. I will also include famous artists names this will interest more teenagers into buying the magazine.

“Pull quotes draws you in”
I will need to wisely decide what I want my pull quote to say for my cover and double page spread for it to be effective making the reader want to read more. Also to be able to pull the audience in I should keep it short and snappy rather than long as it may put readers off and it wouldn’t stand out as much as the font size may have to be small to fit other features onto the magazine as well.

“I like a variety of text and pictures because it makes it more appealing to the eye and it makes it easier to digest the information this also makes the layout look a lot better”
To make my double page spread appealing I will have to think about the amount of text and images I will be using, I should try to balance them out so there will be a variety of both and it will make the layout attractive. Too much text will usually bore teenagers and it may not be easy to digest the information so including images will grab their attention.
