Linking Double Page Spread to Contents and Cover Page
Tuesday, 18 March 2014
DPS: Final editing
I finally had to add another graphic of a purple box, this would link back to the contents and cover pages as I used them a lot and I had to add atleast one to the double page spread for it all to link. Inside the box I spoke about a competition in relation to the artist. I added this rectangle in to fill the bottom space of the page, the convention of a Pop magazine is to always fill up the page, the pages are never empty, they always fill it up with tons of graphic or images which I tried to do throughout the whole magazine.
DPS: More editing
I found a pink coloured rectangle which would fit in well as the background colour of my magazine. I cover a part of the magazine with the rectangle then had use the clone tool to add the colour onto the rest of the page and to colour around the model making sure I didn't colour over her. This added a great touch, it didn't look plain and boring, it had more colour and it makes it look more appealing to the eye.
It still seemed very empty, I kept thinking to myself 'What should I do?', I thought about adding more pictures but I didn't want to randomly place them making it unattractive. I wanted to be more creative with my double page spread, I thought of adding few smaller pictures on the side of the model's bigger image and I could add drop shadow onto them to make it effective but it still sounded boring. Then I had thought of the idea of having a photo strip, it's not seen very often in Pop magazines but it would still look attractive. I started off with a plain photo-strip and began re-sizing images I took few weeks ago of my model and had added them to fit in with the photo-strip. I had to make the frames thicker by going onto PowerPoint and creating rectangles and filling them in with black and placing them on the strip.

There was not much of a space for the last image so it had to be cut off but it seems like it is still carrying on off the page so it still worked well on the page. The strip made the double page spread look much better, it added more of the superstar look to the page and it links with her image and the masthead so it all ties in well by making her look like a major superstar who has just entered into the industry and is already taking over.
DPS: Adding the interview
After I had my interview checked by my teacher I could finally transfer it from Microsoft Word onto Photoshop but before I did that I had to justify my text to make sure it didn't make my magazine seem too messy. I also added in the page number so I wouldn't forget later on, I used the same style as I did for my contents page and it also links back to that because I said Lacey Dixon's interview is on page 10 which I also did for my double page spread. I went onto PowerPoint and had found the circle, I filled it in with purple and added it to the corner of the page.
After adding the whole interview I could see what I had to do to meet the needs of a Pop magazine, it seemed very plain especially the background, I didn't like it white. neither did I like the blank space next to the model's head as it was empty and it had to be filled.
The font had overlapped the image of my model making it hard to read so I tried to blur it out by using gaussian blur and to see whether it had helped or not.

DPS: Photoshop editing
By looking at other magazine's double page spread they either use dots or lines to separate each columns. It has also been used in this magazine to separate the columns.
I went onto PowerPoint and did a line of full stops, took a screenshot and cropped it on paint and had rotated it on Photoshop to separate the text from each other so it wouldn't confuse the reader. It makes it look more Pop and it also seems more professional but I have to make sure each column are the same width as each other because if it seems to be out of proportion then it would look unprofessional.
DPS: Layout
I started off with the blank page and added the image of my model onto one side. This then helped me to visualize how I will set out my page but putting the interview on the other side with the bold masthead above it.
For the title I decided to use the same font as the masthead on my front cover, this would be a major link between the pages as well as the colours being used. The font style had fit in well with the words I used which were 'superstar rising', the 'A' in superstar looks like a star so it goes well with the context I'm trying to produce. It just fits in very well and it links back to the image as the model is portraying a very sterotrypical star with a fur coat around her with pink lipstick. Above the 'superstar rising' I added 'Lacey Dixon...' using the same font style as before, this is to introduce her as a new artist.

DPS: Interview writing
She’s the latest mega
star to come out of the UK and has already scored a number one hit with ‘Don’t
be’ which followed her 2014 hit ‘unforgettable’. Lacey Dixon talks to
Poparazzi.
How did you get
started in this industry?
My story is slightly different to other artists. I used to
sing to myself when I was either home alone (which was quite often) or when I
was taking a shower. I didn’t feel comfortable singing in front of others
including my family because I had very low esteem. Then one day, when I was in
secondary school, we had to perform a song in music class, we were put into
groups and we had to have a lead singer so unfortunately my peer group chose me
to be the singer. At first I was so nervous but I finally gave in at the very
end and began singing and everyone including my teacher said that I had a gift.
I didn’t believe them at first until my teacher offered me singing lessons.
From then on singing became my passion; I began singing at shopping centres,
weddings, parties and so many more functions until I got discovered. So really,
I have my school to thank for everything.
That’s amazing! So how
is fame treating you?
Oh, it has been AMAZING! Couldn’t have asked for anything
better, I have this amazing fan group who always support me on twitter, I love
them unconditionally. I can’t thank them enough. Unfortunately there are also
the haters. Haters get to me but I am getting used to them; they make me
stronger and people will hate so I can’t change their minds about me. Fame can
be quite stressful - it’s not always easy but I love it and wouldn’t want to trade
it for anything else.
Who do you want to
work with in the future?
There are so many, I would love to work with Katy Perry, I
would love to work with Lady Gaga, I would love to work with Jessie J and I
would love to work with Rihanna. (All the amazing ladies...!)
Do you write all of
your songs?
Yes I do, they all mean something special to me. I have a songbook
and I keep it as a diary - if I have something good to say I write it down and
it all eventually turns into a song. I produce the music by playing on my
keyboard for a good 12 hours or so until I get a good rhythm to go with my
lyrics.
What has been the
most memorable moment of the start of your career so far?
The moment I was told I had one million views of my video
for ‘Unforgettable’ online was unforgettable! I cried A LOT; I couldn’t ask for
a more loyal fanbase. I will keep working hard to make my fans proud because I’m
thankful for them.
When are you planning
on releasing your next single?
Very soon, there is so much more to come from me. These next
few months are going to be wildly crazy... I’m going to be releasing many songs
for my first album ever ‘Louder’. Keep an eye out and wait for the next few
announcements.
Do you have any
social sites to keep up to date with your announcements?
Yes I do, my twitter is @laceydixon and my facebook page is
/officiallaceydixon. I use these on daily basis and I also try my best to reply
to fans.
It was nice talking
to you Lacey, we wish you the best of luck for the future.
Thank you for having me, it was lovely talking to you too.
DPS: Image decisions
These are the final pictures I took for my double page spread;
these images were easier to take than when I had to take them for my cover
because I already knew how to use the camera:
Overall these pictures turned out pretty clear, I liked all
of them and they would fit in well with my double page spread. The first image
was clear and bold, it looks very attractive but she doesn't have much
expression being shown on her face – she has a straight face compared to the
other images where she is either pouting or giving a mysterious look on her
face to show that she is new in the industry so she will need to reveal more
about herself. The second image is also bold and she has a slight expression
shown on her face, this makes it eye-catching also the image is portrait so I
can easily fit it onto my double page spread. The last image shows her smiling
which doesn't look attractive with the fur coat; it takes away the mysterious
look which I want to add to her image because she’s just been found as a
singer. I decided to stick to the second image as it is perfect for my double
page spread and I don’t have to mend it as much.

Contents Page: Feedback
I asked my suitable audience through Whatsapp to give me feedback on my contents page:
Kafiya - "I think that the layout used is structured and well organised. The colours are strong and boldto catch attention and information has easy access x"
Parina - "I love the format and the colour coordination and how you have put up quotes for each one of them! That's creative! But overall I LOOOOVE it!"
Lois - "I really like your contents page layout because it has connotations of the Pop genre which is what you are doing. The use of colours is attractive and clear. There's nothing I would criticise, it's really good Sana xx"
Sophia - "I like the sub stories, really interesting and it makes me want to read it, the use of the pictures are effective and bold headline stands out. I also like the use of the colours, the pink and purple don't clash and it looks really good xx"

DPS: Research
I really like this double page spread, I find it very
attractive and eye catching. The image is bold and takes up a page so it seems
quite dominating, it’s all about Jessie J. I love how the masthead talks about
her uprising as a star and in the image it seems like she is actually rising
from her fur coat mainly because of the positioning of the camera shot, this is
also important for my double page spread. I need to have an effective image on
one side of the page, probably with a pull quote and a good interview.
The colours go well together, her lips slightly matches
the orange font colour so they’re still using this idea throughout the
magazine. The interview starts off with an overall explanation about who Jessie
J is and then it goes straight onto the interview with 7 questions. For my
double page spread I won’t have to think of many questions to ask but the
answers would have to be long and probably link to the next question so it
would flow like an actual interview. I will roughly ask 7 or 8 questions and have
each answers be few sentences long. Also if I still have a lot of space left I
could add a small image of the model after the interview which has also been
used for Jessie’s interview.
The questions are quite similar to what I will be asking
my artist, such as ‘How did you get started?’ or ‘Who do you want to work with
in the future?’. I will also be looking at her response for some inspiration to
gain ideas for my interview.

My final contents page
Tuesday, 4 March 2014
Changes to my contents page
During today’s lesson my teacher had asked me to make a few
changes to my Pop magazine to fill up the empty spaces. I made the masthead
smaller as it was far to big and it wasn’t necessary especially since it’s just
the contents page. I moved the images up, closer to the masthead with an image
next to it. I changed the long, pink rectangle to a square below the images and
made the box of page numbers wider. To take up the space in the box I decided
to added smaller text below each subheadings and added more page numbers to
take up some space. Also the pink box also needs to be fixed, I will need to
try and change the Facebook address around since
I can’t fit it onto one line so it looks slightly weird. I’ve also been using
the ruler to line up my text since many off them were not straight and it
looked too messy.
For the editors note I added a signature instead since
most editors use that instead so I tried to create my own signature and scanned
it but it didn’t work out very well so I went onto dafont and had looked for a
font with a signature kind of style. I had finally found one under the
handwritten fonts, it makes my editors note more professional and realistic.
In the box of page numbers I will need to add more or
something else to fill up the space, Pop magazines don’t usually have many
pages above 80 so I don’t want to go above the limit or I could add an image or
a graphic to take up the space.

Contents page: Overview
At the top left corner I added the cover page masthead so it would link to the contents page. Beside the huge image of my model I added an editors letter I spoke about what this issue includes and tried to make it seem like there is a lot to expect in this issue and making the issue seem big. The numbers placed on the images, I included a square from Powerpoint and added it to the contents page and placed it behind the number and lowered the opacity to 70% so it was see through.
In the pink rectangle I added social networking sites, Facebook, Twitter and their website. I also talked about how many followers/likes they have in small beneath them to make it seem slightly more realistic. Under the pink rectangle, I added a circle and used it as a bleed with the page number on it.
Above the rectangle, the small box has the page numbers, here I decided to use pink and purple, the page number is big and stands out whereas the description is small and I tried to minimise the number of words to atleast five and below.

Contents page: Text
I used the same text on my cover page for my contents page, I used the text on Photoshop "Euphemia" I didn't use this throughout my cover page, I used it for the pull quote and the competition announcement but other than that I used the font from a site called 'dafont'. Whereas for my contents page I used the font from Photoshop as I was going to be using a lot of writing on this page compared to front cover so it would have been hard to use the whole text from 'dafont' and it would not have been as clear as I also wrote a paragraph as an editor. For the masthead I used the font that I had used throughout my contents on 'dafont' as it was simple, clear and bold rather than using the font I had used for the masthead on cover page as it didn't look attractive enough and it was used specifically for the front cover masthead. Also for the page numbers I used the same font as the masthead (walkway on dafont) as it was bold. For the pull quote I used the same font style but made it bold and italic so it would stand out as they are the main articles/gossip of the magazine. In the small box with the page numbers, I made the font size 11 as they had to be small like any other contents page. The pull quotes were slightly bigger, the pull quote for page 52 was a size 24 whereas the others were a size 18. The text at the bottom of the page for the social network sites were sizes 11.
Contents page: Color choices
I used the same colour scheme as my front cover so this is a major link between the front cover and contents page. I used pink, purple, black and white, I tried to use pink and purple quite a lot like I did with my front cover so it would be similar. The images I took of my dominating model wore pink and had pink balloons this emphasises the theme colour and it gives the contents page a girly feel. The masthead is black whereas the cover page masthead is pink, I used black instead because it looked much better and it didn't seem unprofessional whereas pink didn't look right and it seemed like the colour pink was more dominant than purple. I used purple to highlight the page numbers on the images to direct the readers to the page.
Contents page: Images for my magazine
For my dominating model I'm going to use this model, I came up with the idea of her having a fear of balloons (which she actually did have a fear of). I was planning on using the second image as this would fit perfectly with the idea but my model said she did not like the image at all. So I decided to change the wordings to "I was afraid of balloons" and I will be using the first image to show that she had fought her fears. I also brought in my dress for my model since she didn't own any, and I brought in a pink one because it seemed girly and it matched the theme colour of my magazine and so did the balloons so they all tie in very well. Her hair was also wavy/curly which is currently in style amongst most teenage girls.
For my second image my model is holding a mic I added this in to make it seem musical and it's a music magazine so it needed a touch of a musical prop. I had her hold it close to her mouth to make it seem like she is singing and enjoying her life as a Pop artist. Then I will add a quote saying "I hated singing" this will contrast with the image and will make the reader want to read more as an artists won't usually say this. I will be using the first image as she is making eye contact with the audience and it looks like she is actually singing with her mouth opened whereas the second image she is just smiling and has her mic close to her mic and it doesn't seem right. The last image of her posing with her arm doesn't look right either it looks quite odd.
Finally for the the image I asked my artist to hold her finger against her lips so it seems like she's hiding a secret, this goes with my feature on artists revealing their top secrets. In this image her clothing didn't matter as much as I mainly was focusing on her facial expression as I will only cut out her face for my contents page. I tried to make sure there was enough light on her face to show her expression, she's not smiling in these images so it subvert the idea of a Pop image. I will be using the second image as it seems more mysterious and it fits perfectly with the idea. The first image you can see a slight smirk on her face, it doesn't fit in with the idea so I won't be using that neither will I use the last one because it seems blurry.
Contents page: layout
I started off my layout by using squares and rectangles from Microsoft PowerPoint and placing them around my sheet to see where they would fit, I tried to make it similar to ‘We Love Pop’ magazine cover.
I changed the colours to pink and purple so it would fit my theme colour. But it still didn't seem right so instead I used a cheat by using triangles and rectangles to do the boarder. And I tried to match it to the magazine cover and it finally looked right after a couple of tries.
As you can see I've also added other squares onto my page, this is to outline where I will be placing my image and text for the contents page. The huge square will be an image of a model who will be dominating my page, whereas the other three small squares will be images of other artists. The rectangular shape at the bottom left corner will be the contents page numbers so it won't be taking up much space like other magazines. Pop magazines usually use more images than text on contents page to make it seem more creative and eye catching, most teenagers may prefer to look at images rather than read. Yet again according to my survey and focus group, my audience would prefer to see a variety of text and images and the feature they're interested in is images, so I will have to produce good images. I will need four different models but one image will be the same model as my cover page and I already have an image from before so I'll need to find three models for my contents and one of the three will be dominating the page instead of the model I used for my cover.
